Psalms 68:16 Meaning Why Do You Look in Envy

Why do you look in envy, you rugged mountains, at the mountain where God chooses to reign? Yes, Yahweh will dwell there forever.

Ego v. Being

The tall hills stand for everything a person builds to feel important, the achievements and images that seem to reach toward the sky. They compete for attention, leaping to be seen. Yet the sacred does not settle on the highest or the proudest thing.

It chooses a smaller hill, and inwardly that hill is the ordinary present moment, the quiet ground of a person's own being. The eternal makes its home not in what is grand but in what is here and humble. When a person stops climbing and rests in that plain awareness, they find they were the dwelling place all along.

Live Psalms 68:16 today

  1. Do one plain thing today with your whole attention, wash a mug, fold a shirt, walk to the corner. Let it be enough, not a step toward something bigger.
  2. In the next group chat or meeting where everyone is signaling how busy and impressive they are, just stay quiet and present. You can be a steady, unimpressive thing in the room and it changes the room.
  3. When you feel the pull to add your accomplishment to the conversation, let the moment pass. Stand there in your ordinary self and feel how little is actually missing.

If I stopped trying to be impressive today, what would be left, and would it be enough?

Before anything else, just chop wood and carry water. The sacred is not above ordinary life, it is the texture of it.
