There were lightnings, sounds, and thunders; and there was a great earthquake, such as has not happened since there were men on the earth, so great an earthquake, and so mighty.
The earthquake is the shaking of the whole material foundation within a person, the moment the old structure of the flesh and its fixed habits breaks apart under the rising force of the spirit. The thunders and lightnings are the sudden discharges of higher energy through the body, the flashes of awakened power and the deep sounding voices of consciousness moving where they had long been still.

ESOTERIC
The earthquake is the shaking of the whole material foundation within a person, the moment the old structure of the flesh and its fixed habits breaks apart under the rising force of the spirit. The thunders and lightnings are the sudden discharges of higher energy through the body, the flashes of awakened power and the deep sounding voices of consciousness moving where they had long been still. This is the great inner upheaval, the collapse of the settled earthly self, more violent than anything the person has known because it reaches the very ground of their being.
When the light finally rises with full strength, the entire lower nature quakes and cracks, and the fixed order a person built out of the flesh gives way so a new state can stand.

What is rigid breaks and what is soft survives. Hard structures crack because they could not bend, and that cracking is not failure but the nature of hardness.
Everything made of parts comes apart, your habits and your sense of who you are included. Clinging to the old shape is what makes the breaking hurt.
The wound is where the light enters. What shatters in a person is often the shell that kept the light outside.
