Revelation 21:23 Meaning The City Has No Need

The city has no need for the sun or moon to shine, for the very glory of God illuminated it, and its lamp is the Lamb.

What does Revelation 21:23 mean?

You have always looked to something outside yourself to light your way: a person, an achievement, a belief that would finally make you feel whole. These are like the sun and the moon, borrowed lights that rise and set and leave you in darkness again.

Ego v. Being

You have always looked to something outside yourself to light your way: a person, an achievement, a belief that would finally make you feel whole. These are like the sun and the moon, borrowed lights that rise and set and leave you in darkness again.

But there is a light within you that no circumstance can switch off, the light of awareness itself, the simple knowing that you are. When you find it, you no longer depend on the world to illuminate your life from the outside. Your own presence is the radiance, and it shines whether or not anything around you is going well.

SUFISM

Sufism

A window at noon shows the room, but no one confuses the glass with the sun pouring through it. In the healed city the borrowed lights are gone, and only the source remains. The heart's error is to keep worshipping the lamps, the small suns of talent and praise, forgetting they only ever passed a brightness along.

The cure is to look through every gift toward its origin. The gentle one who was slain becomes the very window, and the light and the One who gives it are not two things but one shining seen up close.

  1. Go one stretch of today without checking whether anything you posted did well. Let your sense of being okay come from somewhere the numbers cannot reach.
  2. When you want someone to tell you that you did fine, hold off on asking. Sit with yourself for a minute first, and see whether the need loosens.
  3. On a day that is going badly, traffic, a rejection, a difficult call, find the quiet fact underneath it all that you are here and aware. That light stays on when the rest goes dark.
