What does Revelation 22:13 mean?

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

There is something in you that was present when you were a child and is present now, unchanged by all the years between. It did not begin when your body began, and it will not end when your body ends. This is the first and the last in you, the awareness beneath your first thought and your last.

You take yourself to be the passing forms, the roles, the story with a start and a finish. But what you most deeply are is the still presence in which that story appears. Find that, and you touch the beginning and the end that never changes and never dies.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The speaker is consciousness itself, your own I AM, and it names itself as both the source a thing starts from and the fact it ends in. Every desire passes through this single door. It begins as a state you assume within and ends as the same state made visible around you, so the first and the last are one awareness wearing two faces.

You began as this power and you end as this power, having lost nothing in between. What opens a thing and what completes it are not two forces but the one imagining being you use. The beginning is the feeling you take on, and the end is that feeling grown solid in your world. Nothing outside you writes the story. The awareness that says I AM is the whole of it, first cause and finished result together.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The awareness at the center of a person spans the whole arc of a life, from the opening breath to the closing one, and Alpha and Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, name that full range of consciousness inside one body. This seeing has no separate self standing outside it; it holds birth and death and everything between them as one continuous witness. What religion pictured as a cosmic being at the end of time is the constant I-am present before the first thought and remaining after the last.

The beginning and the end are 2 edges of the same awareness rather than 2 dates on a calendar, and every experience of a person unfolds between them. That unbroken witness is what stands behind every changing state.

Alpha and Omega: the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, the full range of consciousness contained in one body from its first breath to its last.

SUFISM

Sufism

Al-Awwal wa al-Ākhir: The First and the Last The Quran sets these two names side by side in one breath, and Ibn Arabi returns to them constantly. Hearing a claim this size, a person tends to start measuring: what came before, what comes after, who else might be in the running. Both directions close, so however far back you look or however far ahead, the same One is already standing there.

God was, and there was nothing with Him: the beginning has no rival A saying of the Prophet, to which the Sufis add that He is now exactly as He was. Anyone who traces things back far enough, family, work, the world itself, eventually runs out of floor. The teaching puts a bottom under that drop: before anything began, nothing stood alongside Him, so everything that exists received its existence rather than owning it.

Everything perishes except His Face: what lasts when the rest stops A line from the Quran that al-Ghazali treated as the last word on oneness. Everything a person leans on carries an expiry date: bodies, friendships, countries, even the sun. Naming the one thing with no expiry date changes how losses land, because they stop looking like the end of the story and start looking like parts of it.

The end returns to the beginning: oneness closes the circle Junayd of Baghdad described oneness as the end coming back around to the start. A life feels like a line heading somewhere unknown, which is why the future can sit in the stomach like a weight. Under this teaching the line bends into a circle, and whatever a person walks toward turns out to be where they came from.

Baqā': What remains The word names what is left in a person once the grabbing stops. Standing before a claim like this, most people feel small, since a short life looks like nothing next to something with no beginning and no end. The comfort is that a person's own permanence was never the point, and whatever lasts in them is held up by the One who lasts.

Live Revelation 22:13 today

  1. Sometime today, when you are alone for a minute, think back to a small moment from when you were seven or eight. Then ask yourself who was looking out through your eyes then, and feel that the same one is looking now.
  2. When you are with someone you have known a long time, let yourself see them past the changes. The hair, the job, the worries, all of it moved, and something in them did not.
  3. In a hard moment today, a tense call or a decision you keep turning over, pause and feel the part of you that is simply here and unbothered. The situation has a beginning and an end. The one watching it does not.

What in you has stayed exactly the same through every year of your life?

Tao Te Ching 25

Before heaven and earth took shape, something was already there, silent and unchanging, and it is still here holding everything that comes and goes.

Advaita Vedanta · Upanishads

The body ages, the mind shifts, the roles fall away, but the awareness that knows all of this was never born and does not die. That is what you are.

Zen

A teacher asks the student to show the face they had before their parents were born. The question points past memory to what was never added and cannot be lost.
