Revelation 3:15 Meaning I Know Your Works

I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold or hot.

What does Revelation 3:15 mean?

The lukewarm state is condemned more sharply than open coldness, and that ranking says something a comfortable person does not want to hear. To be neither hot nor cold is to have declined the choice, to hover in a tepid middle where nothing is risked and nothing is meant.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

The lukewarm state is condemned more sharply than open coldness, and that ranking says something a comfortable person does not want to hear. To be neither hot nor cold is to have declined the choice, to hover in a tepid middle where nothing is risked and nothing is meant. Commitment in either direction is preferred to the evasion of the fence-sitter. The half-hearted have not stayed safe. They have simply refused to exist fully.

The reality of evil is itself the strongest evidence that good is equally present, and a man who will commit to neither has looked away from both. Speak plainly and take a side. Warmth or cold at least engages the world as it is. The temperature that gets spit out is the one that pretends the great questions can be held forever at arm's length without an answer.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Comfortable enough is the state that keeps a person from ever making the decision that would change them.

Nothing compounds from a state that generates no emotion. The lukewarm condition is the one place with no leverage inside it: not enough pain to force a decision, not enough fire to drive one, so the days repeat and the repetition hardens into a destiny nobody chose.

Cold at least tells the truth about where someone stands, and truth is something a person can act on. The middle lies, murmuring that things are basically fine, and that murmur becomes a fence the mind mistakes for the horizon. Christ preferring cold over tepid is preferring anything capable of movement. What neutral costs is not a single decision but the ability to recognize that a decision was ever on the table.

  1. Find the question you have kept deliberately open, the one you reread articles about instead of deciding, and write down where you actually stand. One sentence, in your own handwriting.
  2. When someone asks what you think and you feel the urge to give the safe answer that keeps everyone comfortable, give your real answer instead, kindly and in full sentences.
  3. In the next meeting where you plan to stay neutral so you cannot be blamed either way, say which option you would choose and why. Then own it when it is quoted back to you.

What am I keeping undecided because deciding would ask something of me?

Practice with your whole body and mind or do not call it practice. Half attention is a way of being absent while appearing present.

Bhagavad Gita 3

Better to act from your own nature, imperfectly, than to sit in a borrowed stillness that is really just avoidance. Inaction dressed as wisdom is still inaction.
