Revelation 3:19 Meaning As Many as I Love

As many as I love, I reprove and chasten. Be zealous therefore, and repent.

What does Revelation 3:19 mean?

Correction is not the opposite of love. It grows out of love, the way a servomechanism nudges itself back on course only because it is aimed at something worth reaching.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

Correction is not the opposite of love. It grows out of love, the way a servomechanism nudges itself back on course only because it is aimed at something worth reaching. A man who feels the sting of a wrong turn is being told that a better path exists, and that he is thought capable of walking it. Indifference leaves a person alone with his errors. Care keeps pointing them out.

So the sting itself carries a promise. Repentance is a change of mind, a fresh mental picture that replaces the tired one that kept leading astray. When a person stops defending the old image and lets it be redrawn, the whole striving mechanism swings toward the new aim. The rebuke was never punishment. It was the pull of being wanted back.

  1. Think of one piece of feedback you have been rehearsing arguments against. Sit with it for a minute without defending yourself, and ask what it would look like to simply take it as useful.
  2. Next time someone close to you says something that stings, try saying "tell me more" instead of explaining why they are wrong. The fact that they said anything at all means they still have hopes for you.
  3. In a meeting or a group chat where your work gets picked apart, let the first reaction pass before you type. Then answer the actual point instead of the tone it came in.

What would change if you read correction as a sign that someone still believes you can do better?

The same truth in other traditions

Analects

Confucius said the person who points out your fault is doing you a service, and the one who only flatters you is quietly letting you stay small. Welcoming correction is how character gets built.

Stoicism · Epictetus

If someone tells you what is wrong with you, do not argue and do not flinch. Treat the information as a course heading, hold what is true, and adjust.

Zen

A teacher who lets a student drift is not being kind. The sharp word lands because the teacher has already seen what the student could become.
