Revelation 5:4 Meaning Then I Wept Much

Then I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open the book or to look in it.

What does Revelation 5:4 mean?

The weeping comes because the sealed book cannot be opened by any of the lower faculties, and the book is the spine itself, the scroll of a person's life shut with 7 seals that are the 7 centers up the backbone, the record written within the very cells. No outer power, no effort of the reasoning mind or the appetites, is worthy to break those seals, and this inability is the whole grief: the deep account of what a person truly is stays closed to every faculty that lives below.

The book waits sealed until the risen power within rises to open it, for only that awakened current is fit to unlock the centers and read what is written along the spine. Until then the sorrow is real, because the truest thing about a person lies shut inside the body with no lower hand able to reach it.

Live Revelation 5:4 today

  1. Sit somewhere quiet with your phone face down in another room, and stop trying to figure yourself out for ten minutes. Let the questions about who you are stay unanswered, and just feel your own back against the chair.
  2. When someone close to you says something you cannot make sense of about their own sadness, resist explaining it to them. Sit with them in the not knowing, because the real thing in them is not yours to pry open.
  3. In a meeting or a hard conversation where you feel the pressure to prove what you are worth, let that effort drop for one breath. You cannot argue anyone into seeing you, least of all yourself.

What part of you have you been trying to crack open by force, when it may only open on its own?

Katha Upanishad

The deepest self is hidden in the cave of the heart, smaller than small, and no amount of clever reasoning or sharp argument reaches it. It shows itself only to the one in whom a quieter power has woken up.

Zen · Mumonkan

The gate has no gate, and yet the thinking mind cannot pass through it. Every attempt to force it with logic only proves that the one trying is not the one who can enter.

Sufism · Rumi

Rumi describes a treasure buried under your own house while you wander the world looking for it. The grief of the search is real, and it ends only when something inside you turns and digs where you already stand.
