What does Revelation 7:14 mean?

Dukkha: Suffering Dukkha is the pressure built into conditioned life. Great suffering here is the ordinary weight of loss, fear, and dying pressed until no one could look away from it, the same substance as a hard week, scaled up.

Dukkha: Suffering Dukkha is the pressure built into conditioned life. Great suffering here is the ordinary weight of loss, fear, and dying pressed until no one could look away from it, the same substance as a hard week, scaled up. Whoever stands there in white has already been through what everyone else is still hoping to dodge.

Nissaraṇa: The way out Nissaraṇa names the escape from what binds. John defers to the elder, and the answer he gets is that there is a door in the affliction: these came through it rather than being spared the room. Every teaching on suffering has that shape, since a road out is worth more than sympathy.

Upakkilesa: Stain on the mind Upakkilesa is the grime that dulls a mind. Robes go into the wash because dirt is in the cloth, and the old teaching moves the dirt inward, to grudge, greed, contempt, and the small daily meanness that no outside water touches. A clean cloth takes dye evenly and a filthy one takes it in blotches, which is why the scrubbing comes before the color.

Cāga: Giving up what is one's own Cāga is open-handed release, at its limit the giving of the body itself. Cleansing by another's blood has no counterpart in the Pali texts, but the picture of a life spent for others runs right through them: the hare in the Jātaka stepping into the fire so a stranger can eat. Blood on those robes is somebody else's cost, worn by the ones it carried through.

Visuddhi: Purity Visuddhi is cleanness in a mind whose stains are gone. Made white is the finished state of the washing, a whiteness that now belongs to the wearer and stays put under pressure. Bathing in a holy river leaves a person exactly as cruel as before; what changes the color is how someone lives and what they let go of.

Live Revelation 7:14 today

  1. Name one grudge or small meanness you are carrying and set it down today, not by explaining it away but by deciding not to feed it.
  2. Say the hard, clean thing to the person you have been cool with, and let the air change. Washing is what the two of you do, not what time does on its own.
  3. In the middle of a stretch you cannot get out of, the illness, the job, the long caregiving, stop looking for the exit and look for the door inside it. People come through these, and what they shed on the way is the point.

What am I hoping time will clean that only I can wash?
