Revelation 8:13 · World English Bible

Revelation 8:13 Meaning I Saw

I saw, and I heard an eagle, flying in mid heaven, saying with a loud voice, “Woe! Woe! Woe for those who dwell on the earth, because of the other voices of the trumpets of the three angels, who are yet to sound!”

What does Revelation 8:13 mean?

The threefold woe cried across the height of the inner heaven warns that consciousness fixed on the earthly body is about to be shaken by deeper stages of awakening still to come. The angel crossing the midst of heaven is a higher current of awareness moving through the upper region of the head, sounding an alarm to the part of a person still rooted in flesh.

The trumpet is the vibration that rouses what sleeps, and 3 of them are yet to blow, the coming shocks that disturb every faculty bound to the outer world. Woe falls on the inhabiters of the earth because whatever in a person still identifies with the body must suffer as the higher breaks in.

The angel: a higher current of awareness moving through the upper region of the head, sounding the alarm of coming change. The midst of heaven: the high inner region of the head, the elevated span of consciousness the messenger crosses. The trumpet: the rousing vibration that wakes what sleeps in a person, the sound that shakes each faculty from rest. The number 3: the full set of remaining shocks, the coming stages of awakening that will disturb the earthbound mind. Inhabiters of the earth: whatever in a person still clings to the body and the outer world, the part that suffers as the higher breaks in.

Live Revelation 8:13 today

  1. When something you built gets undone, a file lost, a plan canceled, a body that will not do what it used to, let yourself feel the sting and then ask what part of you was counting on it staying. That part is the one that hurts.
  2. Tell someone close to you, out loud, about a change you can see coming and would rather not. Saying it to another person takes the dread down to normal size.
  3. When a warning lands, a hard email, a doctor's call, a phone buzzing with news you did not want, pause before you brace. The pause is what gives you a say in how the next hour goes.

What am I holding as permanent that was always going to change?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism

The teaching on the three marks says everything built and held onto comes apart, and that clinging to a body or a position as permanent is exactly what makes its change hurt. The pain is in the grip, not the change.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He told students to remember daily that the body is on loan and that losing it is in the order of things. Rehearsing it beforehand means the shock finds you already standing.

Sufism · Rumi

The reed cries out because it was cut from the reed bed, and that very cry is the music. What tears you from what you were attached to is also what gives you a voice.
