Revelation 9:2 · World English Bible

Revelation 9:2 Meaning He Opened the Pit of the Abyss

He opened the pit of the abyss, and smoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke from a burning furnace. The sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke from the pit.

What does Revelation 9:2 mean?

The bottomless pit is the base of the spine and the lower nature coiled there, the depthless reservoir of raw desire in a person. When it is opened without control, the fire in it does not rise as light but pours upward as smoke, and the smoke is confused thought, the fumes of passion clouding the whole inner sky.

The sun is the illumined mind and the air is the breath and clear reason, and both go dark when the lower furnace vents unchecked into the head.

This is an inward eclipse. The same serpent-fire that could give vision instead blackens it, because it was released from below in disorder. A person in this state cannot see; the light of the mind is smothered by the smoke of an ungoverned lower self.

The bottomless pit: the base of the spine and the lower desire nature, a depthless well of raw craving in the body The smoke of a great furnace: passion turned to fumes, confused clouding thought rising from an ungoverned lower fire The sun: the illumined higher mind that gives inner sight The air: the breath and clear reason, the atmosphere of the mind

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

When the deep places of the mind are forced open, what pours out first is not light but smoke. The dark material that was sealed below rises all at once, and it clouds everything. The clear daylight of ordinary thinking goes dim, as if the sun itself had been covered.

This can happen to a single person and it can happen to a whole people. When too much rises from the depths at once, reason cannot see through it, and for a time the darkness sets the terms. Understanding it as smoke from below, rather than as the world truly ending, is what lets a person wait it out instead of being swept away.

  1. When your craving for the next hit of something, the scroll, the snack, the drink, starts running the hour, stop and sit with the want itself for sixty seconds without feeding it. The fog usually thins on its own.
  2. When anger rises at a family dinner, do not say the sentence you have already loaded. Drink some water, breathe twice, and come back to what the other person actually said.
  3. Under real pressure, a deadline, money trouble, a fight, ask yourself if you can still see straight. If the answer is no, do nothing important until the smoke clears.

What decision am I about to make while I cannot see clearly?

Hindu yoga tradition

The Bhagavad Gita says the senses pull the mind like wind pushing a boat off course, and that the one who holds them steady has a clear seat. The energy is not the problem, the lack of a hand on it is.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

It says there is no fire like craving and no net like delusion. The blaze below is what throws up the smoke that blinds a person.

Tao Te Ching

Muddy water left alone becomes clear. The way back to seeing is stillness, not more stirring.
