Romans 1:19 Meaning Because That Which Is Known of God

because that which is known of God is revealed in them, for God revealed it to them.

What does Romans 1:19 mean?

Everything a person can know of the divine is already present inside that person, not stored in temples or books but shown within the body and the mind themselves. The knowledge is manifest in them, meaning the whole design of God is written into human flesh and consciousness, waiting to be read from the inside.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

Everything a person can know of the divine is already present inside that person, not stored in temples or books but shown within the body and the mind themselves. The knowledge is manifest in them, meaning the whole design of God is written into human flesh and consciousness, waiting to be read from the inside. God has shown it by making the seeker in the divine image, so that to study one's own inner workings is to study the maker directly. This is the kingdom within stated plainly: the search that religion sends outward is answered by turning inward, where the evidence of the divine has been placed in each person from the beginning.

SUFISM

Sufism

The knowledge of God is not locked in some far library; it is already set inside the person, the way a spring rises from the ground it was planted in rather than piped in from elsewhere. The fault is looking everywhere outside for what was placed within, and calling the search hopeless. Distraction keeps the water muddy so the face never shows.

The cure is to grow still and let the sediment settle until what was always there becomes clear. God is present as both the gift and the giver of it, having shown Himself in the very heart that now goes looking.

Live Romans 1:19 today

  1. Sit still for five minutes today with nothing to read and nothing to solve, just your own breathing and the weight of your body. Everything you are looking for has to be findable here or it is not findable.
  2. The next time someone asks you a big question about meaning, resist handing them a book. Ask them what they already sense is true, and take their answer seriously.
  3. When you feel lost and your first instinct is to search outside, a podcast, a thread, another opinion, pause for one minute first and ask yourself what you already know. Then search, if you still need to.

What do you already know, that you keep going outside to look for?

The same truth in other traditions

Chandogya Upanishad

The teaching says that what you are looking for is that, and you are already it. The truth sought everywhere turns out to be the seeker's own nature.

Sufism · Ibn Arabi

Ibn Arabi carried the saying that the one who knows their own self knows their Lord, so self-knowledge and knowledge of God are a single study. The evidence was placed in you.

Zen

Zen says looking for your true nature elsewhere is like riding an ox to go searching for an ox. You are already carrying what you set out to find.
