Romans 1:25 · World English Bible
who exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
To serve the creature rather than the Creator is to take some form, an object, a person, an image of yourself, and make it the source of your life. This is what the ego always does.
From the Ego v. Being reading below.
The same verse, read by 2 traditions.

EGO & BEING
To serve the creature rather than the Creator is to take some form, an object, a person, an image of yourself, and make it the source of your life. This is what the ego always does. It fastens onto things that come and go and treats them as the ground of being, and this is the lie, mistaking a passing form for the formless life within it.
The truth was never in the thing itself but in the aliveness that gives rise to every thing. When you look through the form to the presence that animates it, worship returns to its rightful place, and you stop demanding that fleeting objects be what only the source can be.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
The oldest error is to take one part of the world and treat it as the whole. People trade the highest possible good for something smaller and immediate, then bow to it. Money, status, appetite, the state, a cause. Any of these becomes a false god the moment it sits in the place meant for the ultimate.
That inversion corrupts everything downstream, because a life oriented toward a fragment loses the horizon that would have ordered it. Serve the part as if it were everything and it will devour you. Aim instead at what stands above all things, and the rest falls into its proper rank.
Ego v. Being lens
What am I asking a thing or a person to be, that it was never able to be?
The senses run outward to the shining things and miss the one who is looking. Turn toward the source and the objects fall into their right size.
To cling to the changing as though it were solid is the root of suffering. The pain is not in the things, it is in asking them to be permanent.
You are thirsty and you keep licking the cup. The water is what you wanted, and the cup was only ever carrying it.
