Romans 1:9 Meaning For God Is My Witness

For God is my witness, whom I serve in my spirit in the Good News of his Son, how unceasingly I make mention of you always in my prayers,

What does Romans 1:9 mean?

Serving God with the spirit means the inmost self, the place where love and attention live, is handed over, and not only the hands and the voice. Its content is the good news about God's Son, Jesus Christ.

Serving God with the spirit means the inmost self, the place where love and attention live, is handed over, and not only the hands and the voice. Its content is the good news about God's Son, Jesus Christ. Announcing him and praying for people are one work.

Praying without ceasing looks like carrying particular names to God through ordinary hours, so that even work and rest keep asking for them. Such prayer is real labor done on another's behalf, because Christ joins his people closely enough that one person's asking reaches into another's life, and God alone sees it.

Live Romans 1:9 today

  1. Pick two names today and carry them with you, not in a long prayer but in small returns, at the red light, in the elevator, waiting for the kettle. Just lift them and go on.
  2. Pray for someone and do not tell them. No text saying thinking of you, no mention of it later. Let it be entirely between you and God.
  3. In the middle of a hard meeting or a tense phone call, hand over the inside of you, not just your words. Ask for the person across from you right there, while you are still talking.

Who would know you if your praying for them stopped tomorrow?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · metta practice

You sit and send goodwill toward named people, one at a time, the easy ones and the hard ones, until wishing them well is no longer effort but habit.

Sufism · dhikr

Remembrance is kept up under the breath through the whole working day, so that market and kitchen are soaked in it as much as the prayer mat.

Judaism · Hasidic teaching

The inner life is not reserved for set hours. A person serves with their whole heart, in the shop as much as the house of study, because God is wherever they are standing.
