BUDDHISM
## Romans 12:21: "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good."
Taken as a battle order, evil is the aggressor here and good the only weapon that wins. Theravāda maps the same fight, move for move.
Vera: Enmity Enmity is the running feud between people who trade injuries. When someone wrongs you and you strike back, their evil has already jumped into you and travels on through your hand, which is just what being "overcome of evil" means. The feud then outlives the first blow, passing from person to person like a cold caught in a crowded room. Stop the spread in yourself, and the sickness has nowhere left to go.
Khanti: Patient endurance Khanti is the strength to bear provocation without buckling. "Be not overcome" is precisely this holding of the ground: the insult lands, the urge to repay it rises, and you let it pass through you the way a storm passes over a rooted tree. Nothing is swallowed and nothing is thrown back, so the evil finds no opening to conquer you.
Avera: Non-enmity Avera is laying the feud down instead of feeding it. Hatred never ends through more hatred; the fire dies only when someone stops adding wood, and that stopping is how good overcomes the evil. Meet the wrong done to you with no wish to return it, and the old rule of strike-for-strike loses its grip and goes quiet.
Mettā: Loving-kindness Mettā is warm goodwill sent toward another, the wish that they be well. This is the "good" you are handed to overcome with: you turn toward the one who harmed you and wish them safety, ease, and release from their own anger. Setting food before a hungry enemy is this goodwill made visible, warmth offered to the very hand that struck you.
Kusala: The wholesome Kusala is action that is skillful and clean, the bright opposite of harm. "Overcome evil with good" is a plain law: a wholesome deed can conquer a harmful one the way a lamp carried into a room ends the dark without a fight. Return giving for greed, honesty for lies, and calm for anger, and evil is beaten on ground you have chosen.

CYBERNETICS
When a man answers cruelty with cruelty, the cruelty has already won, because it has reshaped him into its own likeness. He begins to act from the wound, and the wound is now steering. Being overcome by evil means exactly that: the harm done to a person becomes the pattern the person runs on.
Meeting it with good keeps the inner picture whole. The one who responds from his own settled self, rather than from the sting, stays the author of his own conduct. Evil overcomes when it turns you into a smaller, angrier version of yourself. Good keeps the larger self in charge.
Buddhism lens
What would have to stay unsaid today for the bad feeling to stop here instead of moving on through me?
The sage answers an injury with kindness, which is how the quarrel stops instead of doubling. Meeting hardness with hardness only hands the trouble forward.
The best revenge on someone who wronged you is to refuse to become like them. If you keep your own character clean, their harm ends where it landed.
The strong one is not the one who wins the fight but the one who masters his own urge. Holding the hand still is the real victory.
