Romans 12:9 Meaning Let Love Be Without Hypocrisy

Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil. Cling to that which is good.

What does Romans 12:9 mean?

Love wearing a mask is the fault here, warmth turned outward for the audience while the inside stays cold. Such pretending rusts the heart, because a person can perform kindness so long they lose track of whether any is real.

SUFISM

Sufism

Love wearing a mask is the fault here, warmth turned outward for the audience while the inside stays cold. Such pretending rusts the heart, because a person can perform kindness so long they lose track of whether any is real. The cure is to do one act of care where nobody sees it and no thanks can return, until the outside and the inside match.

To hate what harms and hold fast to what heals is not two moods but one loyalty. The good a person clings to is a thread that leads somewhere, since every real kindness is a place where its Source quietly shows through the one who gives it.

Live Romans 12:9 today

  1. Do one kind thing today that nobody will ever find out about: pay for something anonymously, clean up a mess you did not make, fix a problem and say nothing in the group chat.
  2. With one person, drop the warm voice you use for everybody and actually mean the question. Ask how they are, then stay quiet long enough to get the real answer.
  3. In a tense exchange, email or in person, do not perform patience you do not feel. Say the honest, kind version instead, even if it is shorter and less impressive.

Where is your warmth running on an audience, and what would it look like with the audience gone?

Tao Te Ching 38

When real kindness fades, a performance of kindness takes its place, and the show is proof the thing itself has gone.

Zhuangzi

The truly good man does not advertise his goodness. Once virtue becomes something to display, it has already turned into its opposite.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

No more talk about what a good person is. Be one. The inward turn and the outward act have to be the same motion.
