Romans 14:17 Meaning For God’s Kingdom Is Not Eating

for God’s Kingdom is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.

What does Romans 14:17 mean?

You will not find lasting fulfillment in what you consume, in the next meal, the next possession, the next pleasure the world of form offers. These come and go, and the self that chases them is never satisfied for long, because no external thing can fill an inner emptiness.

Ego v. Being

You will not find lasting fulfillment in what you consume, in the next meal, the next possession, the next pleasure the world of form offers. These come and go, and the self that chases them is never satisfied for long, because no external thing can fill an inner emptiness.

The kingdom is an inner state, not an object you can acquire. Peace and joy do not arrive when your circumstances finally arrange themselves to your liking. They rise up from within the moment you become present and stop looking for yourself in things. That is the only place this joy has ever come from.

BUDDHISM

Buddhism

Sīlabbata-parāmāsa: Clinging to rules and rituals A fetter: mistaking an observance for the destination it points toward. In Rome the quarrel ran between vegetables and meat, between which days to keep and which to let pass, until each side had made its own menu the whole of its faith. Someone can stand at a signpost, polish it, defend it against the person across the road, and never walk a step down it.

Bhojane mattaññutā: Knowing the measure in food The training of taking food for what it does and no further. Eating and drinking keep a body walking, the way grease keeps a cart axle turning, and that is their entire office. Set back in that place, a plate of meat holds nothing worth wounding a brother over, and a cup holds nothing worth splitting a household for.

Sīla: Virtue Conduct held steady in body and speech. Righteousness of this kind shows itself at the shared table, in whether the one who eats freely treats the careful one with contempt, and whether the careful one returns the favor in judgment. Everything else on the list grows out of it the way a crop grows out of the ground it is planted in.

Passaddhi: Tranquility The settling of body and mind once agitation drops away. Peace standing in the middle of this list is the quiet of having nothing left to defend, since someone who has stopped policing a neighbor's plate has no case to argue and no verdict to await. Stirred water goes clear on its own the moment the stirring stops; nothing has to be added to it.

Nirāmisā pīti: Unworldly joy Gladness that arises without anything needing to be tasted or drunk first. Joy in the Holy Spirit stands apart from the joy of a full cup, which lasts exactly as long as the cup does and drains with it. The other kind is present before the meal is served and still present when the plates are carried away, so it never needs protecting from anyone else's fasting.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

The kingdom is placed inside a person rather than in what he consumes, and that relocation is the whole point. A man can arrange every outer comfort and still live in a cramped, anxious country, because the territory that decides his life is the one he carries within. Righteousness, peace, and joy describe the climate of that inner realm.

Those three rise from a self-image at rest with itself, right in its own eyes and quiet in its own house. No meal supplies them. A man governed from that settled center is already living in a good country, whatever his table happens to hold.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Religion collapses into diet and rule because rules can be counted and inner states cannot, so the mind busies itself with plates while what it calls the kingdom stays untouched. Two men can eat the same meal and one is at war inside, the other at rest.

Rightness, peace and joy name inner weather, and joy is the one that cannot be faked. A solemn face is easy; celebration appears only where the inner division has healed, which is why it makes such a reliable test. Where a spiritual life leaves a person sadder and more careful about food, something has gone wrong at the root and no further rule will repair it.

Live Romans 14:17 today

  1. When you open a shopping app or a food order out of restlessness today, close it and sit with the restlessness for a minute. See what it actually is before you feed it.
  2. At a meal with someone, put the phone face down and taste the food and hear the person. The ordinary version of this, done fully, is better than the upgraded version done absently.
  3. When a day goes wrong and you reach for something to make you feel better, pause and feel your own breathing first. You are looking for something that is already where you are standing.

What were you hoping the next thing would finally give you?

Chasing pleasures is like drinking salt water. Each swallow is real, and the thirst only grows.

No calamity is greater than not knowing when you have enough. The one who knows it is rich while standing still.
