Adhiṭṭhāna: Firm Resolve A determination held steady across years. Rome has been the aim through one blocked attempt after another, and the aim holds while the route keeps changing. Anyone who travels far learns this much: keep the destination, give up the timetable. Asking others to pray belongs to that same resolve, a way of keeping the intention alive while the date stays open.

Idappaccayatā: Conditionality Things arrive only when their conditions are in place. Coming through the will of God puts the journey outside Paul's own arranging: ships, roads, and the temper of a crowd in Jerusalem all have to line up first. Wanting the visit does not produce it, the way wanting rain does not bring rain, though the farmer still plows and sows.

Pīti: Gladness A lift of gladness felt in the body. Arriving in joy is something he wants to bring with him rather than collect at the door; after what waits for him in Judea, he would rather walk in light than worn down and grim. Gladness like this spreads on contact, the way one cheerful person changes a room.

Kalyāṇamittatā: Good Friendship Company that supports the practice. Rest comes together with you, which makes the company itself the relief and not merely the place where relief happens. After carrying a collection, an argument, and considerable danger mostly alone, he asks for the plain thing anyone wants at the end of a hard trip: people who are glad to see him. Friends of this kind restore a person faster than solitude does.

Passaddhi: Calm The settling of body and mind once strain lets up. Joy first and rest after is the order that holds here, since gladness is what quiets a system that has been running hot for months; the tension drains the way it does when you finally sit down among friends and stop watching the door. Refreshment like this sends a person out again, which is why Spain comes up a few lines earlier in the same breath as this stop in Rome.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Joy is what a journey feels like when the traveler has stopped insisting on the outcome. He wants to come, he has arranged what he can, and then he leaves the arrival to the whole and finds the wanting has lost its tension.

Rest of this kind is never produced by effort. It happens between people who are not using each other, when the doer in each has relaxed and there is nothing left to accomplish in the meeting. Two men can sit together for an hour and stand up lighter, and neither of them did anything to bring it about.

  1. Keep the thing you actually want, the trip, the move, the reconciliation, and let go of the date you had attached to it. Check whether what has gone sour is the hope or just the timeline.
  2. Tell someone you are glad to see them before you tell them what you need. Arriving glad changes what happens next for both of you, and it is not something you can pick up at the door.
  3. After a hard stretch, do not go straight into the next thing. Sit with the people who are easy to be around and stop watching the door for an evening; that is the part that sends you back out.

Who am I glad to see, and when did I last tell them so?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Seneca, Letters 6

No good thing is much fun to own with nobody to share it with; the having of friends is itself the benefit. He writes that what he learns only becomes real to him in the telling.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Say "I will sail, if nothing prevents it," and hold the plan with that clause attached. The resolve stays firm; the schedule is not yours to promise.

Pirkei Avot 1:6

Get yourself a friend, deliberately, the way you would acquire anything you intend to keep. Company of that kind is treated as a thing to seek out, not something that happens to you.
