Romans 16:17 Meaning Now I Beg You

Now I beg you, brothers, look out for those who are causing the divisions and occasions of stumbling, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and turn away from them.

What does Romans 16:17 mean?

Unity in the Church rests on shared teaching, not on shared feeling, and so those who quietly reshape the teaching are doing real damage even when they seem pleasant. The warning is about people who pull others away from what was handed on.

Unity in the Church rests on shared teaching, not on shared feeling, and so those who quietly reshape the teaching are doing real damage even when they seem pleasant. The warning is about people who pull others away from what was handed on.

This is why Catholics care about doctrine that can be stated and checked rather than a faith each person builds privately. The phrase about what was learned points backward to something received, not invented. Keeping distance from a persuasive teacher who contradicts it is not narrowness. It is how a community protects the very thing that holds it together.

The measure is what was handed down and received, not how convincing a new idea sounds. A teaching can be clever and still work like a knife in a living body, since the Church is one body and a split in it is a wound rather than a debate.

Stepping back from someone like that is medicine, not punishment. Distance removes the audience a division needs in order to grow, and it leaves the door open for the one causing it to return. The watching is asked of ordinary people too: anyone who knows what he was taught can tell when someone is quietly pulling away from it.

  1. Look honestly at what you have been feeding your head this week: accounts, podcasts, videos. Unfollow or mute one voice that leaves you cynical or angry about people you love.
  2. When someone in a group chat starts stirring things up about another person, do not add to it. Say something kind and plain, or change the subject, or say nothing at all.
  3. When a clever, confident voice starts pulling you away from what you know is true, take it to someone older and steadier before you take it further. Confidence is not the same thing as being right.
