Romans 2:10 Meaning But Glory

But glory, honor, and peace go to every man who does good, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

What does Romans 2:10 mean?

Kamma: Action and Its Result Kamma is intentional action together with the result it carries. Glory, honor, and peace land on the one who does good, and the family line he was born into adds nothing to the sum.

Kamma: Action and Its Result Kamma is intentional action together with the result it carries. Glory, honor, and peace land on the one who does good, and the family line he was born into adds nothing to the sum. A field gives back the crop that was planted in it, and it does not care whose hand did the planting.

Kusala: Wholesome and Skillful Kusala is action that is healthy at the root and skillful in the doing. "Does good" lives in the verb, an ongoing work, the way a carpenter's skill shows in how the joint fits rather than in owning the tools. For a reader who has been busy condemning his neighbor for the very things he keeps doing, the distance between holding the law and working the good is the whole argument.

Puñña: Merit Puñña is the good a person accumulates by acting well. Glory and honor are its ordinary shape, the plain fact that someone decent over years is met with trust before he opens his mouth. It gathers the way small deposits gather in an account, quietly, whether or not anyone is watching.

Santi: Peace Santi is the quiet of a mind with nothing burning in it. Peace comes last of the three and is the one item no one else can hand over: glory and honor are conferred by others, while this is simply how it feels inside to have nothing to cover up. A person who has not cheated his neighbor sleeps through the night without rehearsing his story.

Upekkhā: Even Regard Upekkhā is the steady, unfavoring regard that holds one's own people and strangers on the same footing. Insider and outsider stand on one scale, and the order in which their names are read does not tip it. Leaning toward one's own is the heart's natural drift, and the even view has to be trained, the way a fair judge learns to give both sides the same hearing.

Live Romans 2:10 today

  1. Do one small decent thing today that no one will ever find out about, then let it stay unmentioned. Put the cart back, pick up the trash on the stairs, send the money you owe without a note about it.
  2. Pick someone you have quietly sorted into the wrong group, by politics, by accent, by where they are from, and give them the same patience you would give a friend on the phone or in the checkout line. Same voice, same face, same amount of time.
  3. When you are tense and the easy move is to cut a corner, tell a small lie in an email, shift blame in a meeting, round the number your way, do the honest version instead and accept the cost. That is the thing you get to sleep on tonight.

What would change in how you feel tonight if nobody ever heard about the good you did today?

Bhagavad Gita

The act belongs to you, the outcome does not, and the fruit ripens from the deed itself and not from the name of the one who did it.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

No one is better placed by birth or worse placed by it. What a person is shows only in how they act, and the acting is the whole of what they own.

Analects

The quiet person who does right over many years is trusted before speaking. Reputation is simply conduct that has had time to be seen.
