Ego v. Being

Peace is not somewhere far off, waiting to be earned. Here now, closer than breath, it has always been at hand. So many have not known it because they keep searching in the future, in the next achievement, in the mind's promise of a later calm.

The way is missed because it was never a road to travel. When a person stops chasing peace and grows quiet in this moment, the very thing they were seeking is already present. What was unknown was never absent. It stayed unseen, hidden behind the noise of wanting to be somewhere else.

Live Romans 3:17 today

  1. Sit still for two minutes today without your phone and without a plan for what the stillness should produce. Nothing is supposed to happen.
  2. When someone is venting to you, stop looking for the fix and just be there with them. The calm you give them is the calm you stop chasing.
  3. Stuck in traffic or in a long checkout line, let it be the moment you have instead of a delay before the real one. Feel your hands, hear the room.

What am I waiting to finish before I let myself be at peace?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 48

Stop adding, stop striving, and things settle themselves. The peace was not built, it was uncovered when the effort stopped.

Zen

The master said the way is right under your feet. Looking for it elsewhere is how you keep missing it.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

People go looking for quiet in the countryside or at the shore, when a person can step into stillness in their own mind at any hour.
