Romans 6:16 Meaning Don’t You Know That When You Present

Don’t you know that when you present yourselves as servants and obey someone, you are the servants of whomever you obey; whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness?

What does Romans 6:16 mean?

Whatever you obey, you belong to. This is a plain law of the inner life.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Whatever you obey, you belong to. This is a plain law of the inner life. When you yield yourself to the compulsive thoughts and reactions of the mind, you become their servant, carried wherever they lead, and this bondage is a kind of death, a life lived while unconscious.

But attention can be given elsewhere. You can yield instead to the still awareness beneath the thinking, and then that becomes what moves you. The point is that there is no neutral ground; something is always in command. When you stop obeying the restless voice in your head and align with presence, you are no longer dragged through your days. You are governed by what is awake in you rather than by what is asleep.

Self-Help

Whatever you keep obeying is already your master, and no one obeys something for long without becoming it.

Every act of compliance casts a vote for who is in charge, and the votes accumulate into ownership. Each yielding deepens the belief that this is simply what a person does under pressure, the belief sets the state, the state supplies the emotion on cue, and the next yielding costs less than the one before it until nothing is being chosen.

No unowned position is on offer, only two accounts, and every action deposits into one. The end is implied by the deposits long before it arrives, death on one side and righteousness on the other. What drifting costs is the stretch of time when the habit was still light enough to walk out of.

Live Romans 6:16 today

  1. Count how many times you reach for your phone in one hour without deciding to. The point is not guilt, just seeing plainly which one of you is giving the orders.
  2. When a family member says the thing that always sets you off, feel the pull and do not follow it this once. You are not obeying it, which means it is not in charge.
  3. Under a deadline, when the voice says hurry, finish one task at the speed the task actually needs. The panic was a passenger, not the driver.

What is giving you your orders today, and would you have picked it?

Buddhism · the Dhammapada

The mind untrained does more harm than any enemy, and the mind trained does more good than any friend. It is the same mind either way, and the difference is what it is given to obey.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Some things are up to you and some are not. The person who hands their peace to what is not up to them has made themselves a servant without noticing.

Tao Te Ching 33

Mastering others takes force, mastering yourself takes clear sight. Whoever is not pulled around by their own urges has real strength.
