Romans 7:6 Meaning But Now We Have Been Discharged From

But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that in which we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.

What does Romans 7:6 mean?

To live by the letter is to follow rules the mind has memorized, acting from the past, from concept, from a self that merely obeys. There is no aliveness in this, only the heavy machinery of should and must.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To live by the letter is to follow rules the mind has memorized, acting from the past, from concept, from a self that merely obeys. There is no aliveness in this, only the heavy machinery of should and must.

But you can be released from that old structure. When you act from the freshness of this moment rather than from mental rules, your action becomes alive. You are no longer serving a dead command. You are responding to what is actually here, and that response carries a spontaneity the rigid mind can never produce.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Every rule you obey is borrowed memory, the past commanding the present, and the mind loves it because a rule spares you the trouble of being awake. Follow ten commandments perfectly and you remain mechanical, a machine running old instructions, congratulating itself on precision while nobody is home behind the performance.

The dying spoken of here is the ego's, that false center which needed law the way a beggar needs a certificate. When watching replaces thinking, right action arises the way fragrance arises from a flower, without consultation, without a code, because awareness cannot be cruel and does not need to be told so. Then goodness is a celebration rather than an obedience, and the letter is not broken but simply outgrown.

Live Romans 7:6 today

  1. Do one thing today the way it actually needs doing rather than the way you have always done it. Routines are useful until they stop seeing what is in front of them.
  2. When someone asks for help, respond to what they are actually asking rather than to your usual script for it. They can feel the difference immediately.
  3. When a process at work clearly does not fit the situation, say so plainly and do what the moment needs. Following the letter while the point gets missed helps nobody.

Where are you following a rule you set long ago for a situation that no longer exists?

Tao Te Ching 38

When rules multiply, real virtue has usually already left. The person acting from what is actually here needs less instruction than the one following a list.

Zen

A finger pointing at the moon is useful until you stare at the finger. Rules point, they are not the thing itself.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The skilled cook's blade finds the natural opening in the joint and never forces. His hands answer what is in front of them, which no rulebook could teach.
