CATHOLIC

Catholic

Flesh here names a whole way of living that is ruled by self-will. Bodies are not the problem; the Catholic tradition holds the body good, made by God and destined to rise. What changes a person is a new occupant, the Spirit taking up residence at baptism and remaining as sanctifying grace, God's own life shared with the soul.

Belonging to Christ is therefore more than admiring him or agreeing with his ideas. The Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ are one and the same, so a life closed to that Spirit stands outside the family however correct its opinions.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

You are not the body, nor the restless stream of thought that calls itself your life. There is a deeper dimension in you, a presence, a stillness beneath the mind's noise, and when you sense it you are no longer ruled by form. To live in the flesh is to be lost in thinking, mistaking the surface for the whole.

The moment you feel this quiet aliveness within, you stop identifying with the anxious self the mind invents. Anyone who never touches that presence stays trapped in ego, unable to know what he truly is, because his sense of self is borrowed entirely from thought.

Water takes the color of the cup it fills. A heart ruled by its appetites gives off the appetites; a heart where God's spirit lives gives off that light, and the difference shows in what a person pours out. The fault is imagining one can belong to God while still colored entirely by craving.

The cure is to empty the cup, clearing the greed and anger so the true guest has room. Belonging is not a badge worn outside but a presence dwelling within, and the heart becomes whatever lives in it.

  1. Before a decision you would normally make on reflex today, pause and ask what love would do here rather than what you want. Then follow the answer.
  2. In your next hard conversation, give up the goal of winning it. Ask one honest question and actually listen to the whole answer before replying.
  3. When a meeting or a comment hits your pride, feel it and do not act on it. Let the urge to defend yourself pass, and respond thirty seconds later than you wanted to.

The one who has mastered the small self finds a friend within, while the one still ruled by it lives at war with himself. The body is not the enemy; the grasping is.

Stop trying to run the river by force. When you empty out your own insistence, something larger moves through you and the work becomes easy.
