Romans 9:16 Meaning So Then It Is Not of Him

So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who has mercy.

What does Romans 9:16 mean?

Mashīʾa: God's will The Quran sets every human wanting inside God's wanting. Anyone who dates their change of life to the moment they finally decided will hunt for the start of that decision and come up empty.

Mashīʾa: God's will The Quran sets every human wanting inside God's wanting. Anyone who dates their change of life to the moment they finally decided will hunt for the start of that decision and come up empty. The wanting was already underway when they got there, handed over rather than built.

Tawfīq: the help that makes an effort land Effort still happens; it just stops being the reason anything works out. Anyone who has tried the same thing twice knows the odd gap: same push, and one time it takes, the other it goes nowhere. The tradition puts that difference on God's side, so hard work becomes something a person offers, not something that buys a result.

No one enters the Garden by their deeds, not even me, unless God wraps me in mercy: the ledger buys nothing The Prophet included himself in it, and that is the part that lands. Someone quietly keeping score of their decent years treats the score as the price of admission. Once even the finest record on offer falls short, keeping score stops being the thing a person's hope rests on.

ʿInāya: God's care that came first Ibn Arabi uses this for care already in place before anyone existed to earn it. Mercy that follows no visible schedule can look like favoritism, and that is where people get stuck. Under this word, the giving was aimed at a person from the beginning, so searching for what they did to deserve it turns up nothing.

My mercy runs ahead of my anger: mercy gets there first God speaks this in the first person, reported by the Prophet. Anyone braced for a verdict pictures mercy as a pardon that might arrive once the case has been heard. Putting mercy ahead of the whole proceeding means a person is met with kindness before the record is ever opened.

Live Romans 9:16 today

  1. Think back to a change in your life you credit to the day you decided, and try to find where that wanting started. Sitting with the fact that you cannot locate it is the point.
  2. When someone catches a break you worked harder for, let it be theirs without auditing whether they earned it. You can be glad for them without a verdict.
  3. Before a high-stakes thing, the interview, the hard conversation, the result you cannot control, do your preparation and then hand it over out loud. "I did what I could, the rest isn't mine" is a true sentence, not a resignation.

If your good years do not buy you anything, what are you actually resting on?

Tao Te Ching 37

Things come right by themselves when nobody forces them. Pushing produces strain, not results, and the real work happens on a schedule you did not set.

Bhagavad Gita 2

You have a claim on your effort and no claim on its fruit. The work stays yours to offer; the outcome was never a purchase you could make.

Release on your own power is not the road. Those who stop counting their own merit and lean on what is given find they arrive, and the counting had been holding them up all along.
