Ruth 2:9 · World English Bible

Ruth 2:9 Meaning Let Your Eyes Be on the Field

Let your eyes be on the field that they reap, and go after them. Haven’t I commanded the young men not to touch you? When you are thirsty, go to the vessels, and drink from that which the young men have drawn.

What does Ruth 2:9 mean?

Direction from someone who sees further is worth more than the harvest it produces. Energy follows the line the eyes are held on, which is why attention spread across ten fields returns less than attention kept on one.

Direction from someone who sees further is worth more than the harvest it produces.

Energy follows the line the eyes are held on, which is why attention spread across ten fields returns less than attention kept on one. The narrowing concentrates effort, concentrated effort produces a harvest that the same hours would not otherwise yield, and a harvest is what buys a person a future instead of another day.

Being told where to look, and where the water is, amounts to inheriting another person's experience without paying its tuition. A woman newly arrived in a country had no way to see which field was safe; that distinction existed only from where he stood, and everything she gathered afterward came along the line he set for her eyes. Refusing direction like that out of pride costs exactly the years it would have let a person skip.

Live Ruth 2:9 today

  1. Pick the one thing you are trying to figure out alone and spend twenty minutes learning it from someone who already knows, a real book, a real course, not forty open tabs.
  2. Ask one person today the question you have been embarrassed to ask, and then write down their answer instead of nodding and losing it by the evening.
  3. When someone more experienced tells you where to put your attention, in a meeting, on a project, try following their line exactly for a day before you decide you know better.

Whose experience could save me years, if I were willing to look like a beginner?

Zen

A student can spend ten years finding what a teacher could have shown in an afternoon, which is why the tradition says find the one who has walked the road and walk behind them.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

Get yourself a teacher, because what you learn alone you pay for in years, and what you learn from them you receive as a gift.

Bhagavad Gita 4

Knowledge is handed down from those who have seen, and the student who approaches with questions rather than pride is the one who actually receives it.
