Song of Solomon 1:6 Meaning Don’t Stare at Me Because I Am

Don’t stare at me because I am dark, because the sun has scorched me. My mother’s sons were angry with me. They made me keeper of the vineyards. I haven’t kept my own vineyard.

What does Song of Solomon 1:6 mean?

Mine own vineyard have I not kept. How many people spend their whole lives keeping the vineyards of others, absorbed in tasks and demands and the judgments of family, while the one thing that truly matters goes untended.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Mine own vineyard have I not kept. How many people spend their whole lives keeping the vineyards of others, absorbed in tasks and demands and the judgments of family, while the one thing that truly matters goes untended. Your own vineyard is your inner life, the aliveness and awareness within you.

And notice the shame, the wish not to be looked upon, the worry over how the sun has darkened you. This is the ego, forever anxious about how the outer form appears. But you are not your appearance, and you were not born only to labor in the fields of the world. Turn your attention inward again and tend the vineyard you abandoned, for that is where your life actually is.

SUFISM

Sufism

She has tended everyone's field and let her own go dry, and under it runs a fault worth naming: the pull to earn approval by endless doing while the inner ground cracks. Busy service can be its own quiet vanity. The cure is to keep one's own vineyard first, to guard the heart in private before spending it on every watching eye.

And the scorching is not disgrace. The sun that darkened her is the same heat that ripens fruit; what she is ashamed to show is where the burning left its sign that she was reached.

  1. Give yourself fifteen unclaimed minutes today, no screen, no errand, nothing to show for it. That is your own ground, and it only gets tended on purpose.
  2. When a group chat or a family member pulls you toward a job that is not yours, say no once, kindly and without a long explanation. Not every request is an assignment.
  3. The next time you catch yourself checking how you came across, in a photo, an email you sent, a thing you said in a meeting, turn your attention back inside and feel yourself breathing. You are not the picture. You are the one looking.

Whose vineyard have you been keeping while your own sits dry?

Knowing others is a kind of cleverness. Knowing yourself is the real light, and it is the one most people skip.
