Song of Solomon 1:8 Meaning If You Don’t Know

If you don’t know, most beautiful among women, follow the tracks of the sheep. Graze your young goats beside the shepherds’ tents.

What does Song of Solomon 1:8 mean?

The flock is the herd of divine thoughts moving through a person in meditation, and following their footsteps is the way of one who does not yet know, tracing the higher thoughts back to their source. The shepherd is the watcher of those thoughts, the awareness standing over the mind as it grazes.

The flock is the herd of divine thoughts moving through a person in meditation, and following their footsteps is the way of one who does not yet know, tracing the higher thoughts back to their source. The shepherd is the watcher of those thoughts, the awareness standing over the mind as it grazes. To feed the young ones beside these is to nourish the newest thoughts near the ones already awake.

But the tents are the holy place of the spirit, and here in the country of Kedar they stand for the intellect that pitches itself in front of that holy place and blocks the way in. So the fairest is sent to walk with the flock and tend her young close to where the reasoning mind has camped, learning to pass the intellect rather than pitch her rest inside it.

SELF-HELP

Admitting you do not know the way is what makes the trail other people already left readable to you.

Every flock that found pasture left the route printed behind it, so not knowing where to go is temporary and never a verdict on the person who asks. The belief that the way is already marked settles someone out of the panic that makes them wander, and a calm state reads ground that a frantic one runs straight past.

Proximity does the teaching. Grazing beside those already producing the result puts a person inside the daily decisions nobody writes down, and those decisions are most of the strategy. Refuse the trail and a person spends whole seasons learning what an afternoon of watching hands over.

  1. When you cannot figure something out alone, stop trying to think your way through and instead retrace what already worked. Look back at the last time you felt clear and quiet, and simply go do that same ordinary thing again.
  2. Sit near someone who is further along than you and let them talk, without turning it into a debate in your head. You can hold your questions and still absorb a lot just by being in the room.
  3. When your mind starts building a case for why you already know better, let that case go unfinished and keep walking. The reasoning mind pitches a comfortable tent, and you do not have to sleep in it.

Where am I camping in my own explanations instead of walking a little further?

Zhuangzi

When you do not yet know the way, follow the tracks of those who have walked it. The footprint is not the foot, but it points where the foot went.

Zen · Rinzai tradition

The student who cannot yet see sits near the teacher and does the small daily work beside them. Nearness itself teaches what explanation cannot.

Bhagavad Gita 4

When understanding fails, stay close to those who have realized it, serve them, and ask. Clarity comes through proximity before it comes through argument.
