Song of Solomon 2:9 Meaning My Beloved Is Like a Roe

My beloved is like a roe or a young deer. Behold, he stands behind our wall! He looks in at the windows. He glances through the lattice.

What does Song of Solomon 2:9 mean?

The divine within stands just on the far side of the boundary of the flesh, near and alive yet screened from plain sight, the beloved who is present but not yet fully seen. What hides him is the covering of symbol and figure laid over the sacred, the lattice of parable and coded language a person must look through rather than at.

Esoteric

The divine within stands just on the far side of the boundary of the flesh, near and alive yet screened from plain sight, the beloved who is present but not yet fully seen. What hides him is the covering of symbol and figure laid over the sacred, the lattice of parable and coded language a person must look through rather than at. He shows himself through that screen, letting the light of his nearness come across while the veil of symbolism still hangs between, so the seeking awareness catches him behind the wall and through the openwork without yet standing face to face. The concealment is not distance but the figured cloth over the meaning, and to look through it is to find him already there.

Wall: the boundary of the flesh, the last partition standing between a person and the divine that waits just beyond it Windows and lattice: the veil of symbolism, the openwork of parable and coded language that both conceals the indwelling divine and lets its light show through when looked past

Live Song of Solomon 2:9 today

  1. Read something you love today and look through the words rather than at them. When a line stops you, sit with what it points to for a moment instead of admiring how it was said.
  2. When someone talks around what they mean, listen for the thing behind their sentences instead of answering the sentences. Most people show themselves through a screen before they come out from behind it.
  3. In a tense exchange, remember the person is right there on the other side of all the words, closer than the argument suggests. Answer who is behind the wall, not just what came over it.

What have I been studying the surface of when I could be looking through it?

The same truth in other traditions

Sufism · Rumi

The beloved is behind a thin curtain, not far away, and the curtain is made of the very words we use to point at him. What hides is also what lets the light through.

Tao Te Ching 1

The name is not the thing; speak the way and you have already lost it. Words are the lattice, useful only if you look past them.

Hinduism · Upanishads

The real is covered by a golden lid, beautiful and dazzling, and the beauty itself is what must be looked through. Lift it and what was behind it was always there.
