Song of Solomon 8:6 · World English Bible

Song of Solomon 8:6 Meaning Set Me as a Seal

Set me as a seal on your heart, as a seal on your arm; for love is strong as death. Jealousy is as cruel as Sheol. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a very flame of Yahweh.

What does Song of Solomon 8:6 mean?

To be pressed like a seal on the heart is to be known at the depth where nothing is performed. Love this deep is not the mind's attachment, which clutches and fears loss.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To be pressed like a seal on the heart is to be known at the depth where nothing is performed. Love this deep is not the mind's attachment, which clutches and fears loss. Such love recognizes one being in another, and it holds with the strength of death because it belongs to what does not die.

Where the ego enters, this same fire curdles into jealousy, the grave's coldness, a burning to possess. The flame is one energy read two ways. Flowing from Presence, love warms without gripping. Flowing from need, it scorches. What decides is whether a person meets the other from stillness or from lack.

SUFISM

Sufism

To ask to be pressed like a seal into the beloved's heart is to want a love with no rival, and that desire uncovers the fault it must fear: a jealousy that can curdle into grasping. The cure is to let the wanting burn clean, to love without clutching, since a love strong as death need not seize what it already holds.

And the fire in it is not merely human heat. Its flashes are named a flame of the Lord, one blaze showing in two hearts, lit from beyond them both.

  1. When jealousy flares at something on a screen, a photo, a promotion, a group chat you were not in, name it to yourself as fear rather than truth. Feel where it sits in your chest, let it burn down, and do not act while it is hot.
  2. Tell someone close to you one plain thing you see in them that has nothing to do with what they do for you. Then stop talking and let it land.
  3. Under pressure, when you want to check their phone, reread the message, or ask the question that is really a test, wait ten minutes first. Most of the gripping passes, and what is left can be said kindly.

Is this love asking to give something, or asking to hold something?

Buddhism

There is love that wishes another well without conditions, and there is craving that calls itself love while needing to hold. They feel alike from the inside and lead to opposite places.

Sufism · Rumi

The wound is where the light enters, and the fire of longing is what burns away everything that is not love. The same burning either purifies or destroys, depending on what is clung to.

Hinduism · Upanishads

You do not love another for their sake alone, you love them because the self you are is awake in them too. Recognition, not acquisition.
