Titus 1:14 Meaning Not Paying Attention to Jewish Fables

not paying attention to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.

What does Titus 1:14 mean?

Belief taken from another is the surest way to miss whatever it points at. A story about the sun, repeated for a thousand years by people who have never opened their eyes at dawn, grows heavier than the sun itself, and then men fight and die for the story.

Commandments of men are somebody's living experience cooled into rules. In the one who saw, it was fire. Passed to a second man it becomes doctrine, and by the third it is only habit, obeyed without any light behind it. What remains is to look for oneself, unlearned, at what is actually here, and no one can do that on another's behalf.

  1. Take one rule you live by without thinking and ask where it came from and whether it is actually true for you. Not to rebel. Just to know whether you are carrying your own thing or someone else's leftovers.
  2. In your next disagreement, stay with what you have actually seen and lived instead of what you read or heard someone say. It is quieter, less winnable, and far harder to argue with.
  3. When a story is going around the group chat or the feed and everyone has already decided how to feel, hold off for an hour. Letting the crowd's certainty pass through you without sticking is a small act of honesty.

Which of my strongest convictions have I never once checked against my own experience?

Zen

The finger pointing at the moon is not the moon. People who memorize the finger spend their lives arguing about its shape.

Tao Te Ching

The Tao that can be put into words is not the Tao. What a teaching names, it also narrows.

Buddhism

Do not accept a thing because a teacher said it, or because it is written, or because everyone around you repeats it. Test it against your own experience, then keep it or let it go.
