A pastor's teaching is not his own invention. He receives it, guards it, and hands it on unbroken, which is why the phrase is holding fast rather than working out.

ORTHODOX
A pastor's teaching is not his own invention. He receives it, guards it, and hands it on unbroken, which is why the phrase is holding fast rather than working out. The faith belongs to the whole Church across the centuries, and a man is trusted with it the way a steward is trusted with someone else's treasure.
Sound teaching has two uses, and both are needed. It builds people up when they are struggling, and it answers those who twist the faith into something else. A teacher who can only comfort leaves the flock defenseless, and one who can only argue leaves them unfed. Keeping what was given is what makes either possible.
Orthodox lens
Am I better at comforting people or at telling them the truth, and which one am I avoiding?
The chain is spelled out deliberately: Moses received it, handed it to Joshua, and so on down the generations. The authority sits in the faithful passing on, not in anyone's originality.
The lineage is traced teacher by teacher, and a student is confirmed only by one who received it themselves. What is handed over is held in trust and expected to arrive intact.
The teaching is learned sitting near a teacher, received word for word before it is ever interpreted. The student's first job is to hold it accurately.
