Zechariah 2:11 Meaning Many Nations Shall Join Themselves to Yahweh

Many nations shall join themselves to Yahweh in that day, and shall be my people; and I will dwell among you, and you shall know that Yahweh of Armies has sent me to you.

What does Zechariah 2:11 mean?

A chosen people can grow proud of the fence around them, mistaking the gift of nearness for a private possession. This promise widens the circle until many nations come in, and the cure is to loosen that grip, to welcome the stranger the way a spring never asks who is drinking from it.

A chosen people can grow proud of the fence around them, mistaking the gift of nearness for a private possession. This promise widens the circle until many nations come in, and the cure is to loosen that grip, to welcome the stranger the way a spring never asks who is drinking from it.

The promise is that God will come to live among them, and by that dwelling they will finally know who sent the message. Nearness becomes the proof, for a person understands the Sender only once He has moved in close.

Live Zechariah 2:11 today

  1. Think of one person you have quietly filed as not your kind, maybe someone in a comment thread or a neighbor you avoid, and let yourself picture them as already inside the circle rather than waiting at its edge.
  2. Today, bring one person who usually sits outside your group into it: reply warmly to the quiet one in the group chat, or ask the coworker nobody eats with to grab lunch.
  3. When someone new disrupts a settled routine at work, your team, your family dinner, your usual seat, catch the flash of territory in your chest and make room instead of defending the spot.

Where have I started treating a gift as something I own?

The highest good is like water, which gives itself to everything low and does not pick and choose who it reaches.

Buddhism · the Metta Sutta

Goodwill is practiced the way a mother guards her only child, except the circle is pushed outward in every direction until no one is standing outside it.

Judaism · the Talmud

The command to love the stranger is repeated more than almost any other, because a people rescued from exile is the least excused for building a fence.
