EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

A man stands before the messenger dressed in soiled clothes, and the clothes are not hidden. They are simply seen. The stained garment is the accumulated self, every old failure and role and story worn like cloth against the skin, mistaken by most for who they are.

What matters is that he stands there anyway, exposed in the light without pretending to be clean. Presence does not require a person to arrive already spotless. Awareness meets the soiled self as it is, and in being fully seen the garment loses its grip. The one standing there was never the clothing. He is what remains when the messenger's eyes rest on him.

  1. Think of the thing about yourself you would least want posted, and sit with it for a minute without fixing it or explaining it. Just let it be seen by you, plainly.
  2. Tell one person something true that you usually dress up. The late payment, the thing you forgot, the way you actually felt in that meeting. Say it flat, without the story that makes it look better.
  3. When you are caught out at work, a mistake found, a deadline missed, resist the first instinct to build the case. Say what happened, say what you will do, and let that be the whole of it.

What am I still wearing that I have mistaken for myself?
