What does Zephaniah 1:5 mean?

Two allegiances held at once do not double your cover; they cancel, and you end up committed to nothing.

A hedge feels like prudence and works like insurance, and its effect is that no clear order ever reaches the body. Conflicting beliefs produce a conflicted state, a conflicted state gives half strength in both directions, and half strength proves that neither allegiance delivers, which gets taken as proof the hedge was wise.

Yahweh's quarrel here lands on people who kept two oaths alive and therefore never made one, since an oath with a second oath attached was a preference from the beginning. Swearing twice costs a person the chance to ever find out what one whole commitment would have produced.

  1. Pick the one thing you have been half doing for months, the training, the writing, the sobriety, the prayer, and take the backup plan off the table for thirty days. Say it plainly to yourself, because the hedge is what has been draining it.
  2. Tell one person the thing you have only been hinting at in group chats. Say the actual yes or the actual no, out loud, to a face, and let them hold you to it.
  3. In the next meeting where you are tempted to agree with both sides so nobody is unhappy, pick one and say why. Half agreement reads as weakness to everyone in the room, including you.

Where am I keeping a second option alive, and what is it quietly costing the first?

Tao Te Ching 22

The one who holds to one thing becomes whole. Grasping at everything at once is how a person ends up with nothing in hand.

To study one way fully is to study yourself fully. Sampling many paths a little keeps the self comfortably unexamined.
