Zephaniah 1:7 Meaning Be Silent at the Presence

Be silent at the presence of the Lord Yahweh, for the day of Yahweh is at hand. For Yahweh has prepared a sacrifice. He has consecrated his guests.

What does Zephaniah 1:7 mean?

To hold your peace at the presence of the Lord GOD is to let the inner talking fall away and stand in what is here. The day of the LORD draws near, not on a far calendar but as the present moment pressing in, the one hour no one can postpone.

Ego v. Being

To hold your peace at the presence of the Lord GOD is to let the inner talking fall away and stand in what is here. The day of the LORD draws near, not on a far calendar but as the present moment pressing in, the one hour no one can postpone. Stillness is the readiness for it.

The LORD has prepared a sacrifice and already called the guests. Something in the old, defended self is being laid down so a person can come to the table emptier and more awake. When the striving quiets, the invitation is heard. The guest was named before the noise ever began.

Live Zephaniah 1:7 today

  1. Before you open your phone in the morning, sit still for one minute without starting the inner commentary about the day. Just be in the room you woke up in.
  2. In your next conversation, leave a few seconds of silence after the other person finishes instead of filling it. You will hear something you would have talked over.
  3. When the day presses in and your mind starts racing ahead, stop and feel one breath all the way through. The hour you are dreading is not here yet, and this one is.

What would I hear today if the talking in my head went quiet for a moment?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Chuang Tzu

The still water is the one that reflects. Let the inner churning settle and you see what is actually there.

Zen

Sit down, stop adding thoughts to thoughts, and the moment in front of you turns out to be enough. There is nowhere else the next hour can arrive.

Quakers · the practice of silent waiting

They gather and say nothing, because the speaking they trust can only be heard once their own has stopped. Silence is treated as attention, not absence.
