1 Corinthians 12:12 Meaning For as the Body Is One

For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.

What does 1 Corinthians 12:12 mean?

A hand, a foot, an eye. Each looks separate, each does its own work, yet no one of them was ever a life on its own.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

A hand, a foot, an eye. Each looks separate, each does its own work, yet no one of them was ever a life on its own. They are all the single body appearing in many shapes, and the shapes forget this only when they mistake their edge for the whole of them.

The same holds for what the words call Christ, the one awareness wearing countless faces. People feel divided because each identifies with a small part and defends it. Under that surface, the same aliveness moves through everyone. When a person senses this, the loneliness of being a separate piece begins to dissolve, and what remains is the quiet knowing that no member was ever alone.

Live 1 Corinthians 12:12 today

  1. On your commute, let your eyes rest on a few of the strangers around you and remember that each one has a morning behind them as full as yours. Nothing to say about it, just hold it for a stop or two.
  2. Pick the person who annoys you most this week, a coworker, a relative, the loud one in the group chat, and find one true thing you have in common with them. Then speak to them once as if that were the main fact between you.
  3. When a group project goes sideways and the blame starts moving around, resist the pull to get yourself clear of it. Say we before I, and ask what the whole thing needs next.

Where today are you guarding your corner of something that was never divided?

Upanishads

The salt dissolved in water cannot be found in any one spot, yet every mouthful tastes of it. You are that, not a piece of the whole but the whole in a particular place.

Buddhism

Nothing stands alone. Every seemingly separate thing arises leaning on everything else, and the sense of being a sealed-off unit is the mistake, not the starting point.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He told himself he was a limb of the body of humanity, not a severed part dropped beside it. Cut yourself off from another person and you have cut yourself.
