1 Corinthians 12:13 Meaning For in One Spirit We Were All

For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all given to drink into one Spirit.

What does 1 Corinthians 12:13 mean?

Baptism joins a person to other people, not only to God. Coming up out of that water places someone inside a living body, sharing one breath with people they did not choose and may not like.

Baptism joins a person to other people, not only to God. Coming up out of that water places someone inside a living body, sharing one breath with people they did not choose and may not like.

The differences stay. A slave did not stop being a slave, and a Greek did not become a Jew. What ended was the power of those labels to rank anyone, since the same Spirit is given to all of them, the way a single cup passes around a table and each person receives what everyone else receives.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The labels that seem to divide people, their nation, their status, their history, belong only to the surface, to the world of form. They describe the outer wrapping and never the essence.

Beneath all of it, one and the same life is looking out through every pair of eyes. The awareness in you is not a different awareness from the one in another. There is only one, wearing countless faces. When you sense this directly, the walls between yourself and others soften, because you recognize in them the very life that you are.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

One Spirit is the single awareness of being that lives in every person, and the one body is the assembly of all these selves seen at last as one. Baptism is a complete covering, a merging, so to be baptized into one body is to be immersed in the recognition that Jew and Gentile, bond and free, are not separate lives but one imagination wearing many faces. The divisions are states, not persons, and every state opens into the same self.

To be made to drink into one Spirit is to take that awareness inward until it becomes your own conviction. The apparent many, seen fragmented, regroup into the one being that is yourself pushed out on every side. What baptizes and what is drunk are the same power, your own I AM, and the whole varied world is that single consciousness bearing witness to itself in you.

  1. When you are alone with your phone, think of one person in your group chats or your building whose way of doing things grates on you. Say their name to yourself and let them be fully themselves, without you fixing them in your head.
  2. Today, sit or stand with someone you would not have picked: the coworker you avoid at lunch, the relative who talks too much at dinner, the neighbor in the elevator. Stay the extra minute and ask them something real.
  3. In a meeting or a crowded line where someone is being treated as less important, give them the same attention you would give the person everybody is already listening to. Same eyes, same tone, no ranking.

Who have I quietly placed below me, and what would change if I stopped?
