1 Corinthians 15:44 Meaning It Is Sown a Natural Body

It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body and there is also a spiritual body.

What does 1 Corinthians 15:44 mean?

2 bodies live in one person, and the whole work of awakening is the passage from the first to the second. The natural body is consciousness bound to the senses and the appetites, planted in the earth of the flesh and moving by instinct and reaction.

Esoteric

2 bodies live in one person, and the whole work of awakening is the passage from the first to the second. The natural body is consciousness bound to the senses and the appetites, planted in the earth of the flesh and moving by instinct and reaction. The spiritual body is that same awareness lifted free of the senses, raised into the field of pure mind that does not depend on the outer organs to know. Both exist together now, the lower one already grown and the higher one waiting to be raised, so the seed and the harvest are the same self in 2 states.

A person carries both at once, and rising means the awareness once ruled by the body coming to be ruled by the spirit instead.

Live 1 Corinthians 15:44 today

  1. Sometime today, eat one thing slowly enough to taste it, and watch yourself tasting. Same bite, two things happening, the body eating and something quietly aware of it.
  2. When you are tired and short with someone, say plainly that your body is running low rather than taking it out on them. Knowing which part of you is talking saves the evening.
  3. In a stressful moment, feel your hands and your breath first, then decide. The body will still react, the aware part of you does not have to be dragged along with it.

Right now, which one is running your day, your body or the one watching it?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · the sheaths of the self

The teaching describes layers wrapped around a person, the body of food outermost and the awareness innermost. Both are here at once, and waking means knowing which layer you are speaking from.

Zen · chop wood, carry water

Before awakening, ordinary work. After awakening, the same ordinary work. The body does not change, the one doing it does.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You are a little soul carrying around a corpse, he said, not to despise the body but to keep clear which part of you is actually deciding.
