EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

There are two ways of being human. The first lives as a separate self, identified completely with the body and the personality, a fragile creature that is born and must one day die. Most people know themselves only in this way, as a small self with a name and a story.

But a second way is possible, and it is the whole direction of human awakening. You come to realize that beneath the mortal person is a formless, aware presence, the very life that animates you. When you awaken to it, you are no longer only a self that dies; that presence flows through you and gives life to others. This is the shift you are here to make: from knowing yourself as the person who will die, to knowing yourself as the living awareness that was animating you all along.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

Adam is the atom, the red earth and ground substance of the body, made a living soul as the first spark of life. The last Adam is the second atom, the same nuclear pattern carried one stage further, the fission at the heart of the Genesis story completing itself in a person. Where the first is animated flesh, the second is the electricity that animates, spirit as the quickening current that gives the body its life.

So a person holds both: the earthly atom that walks as a living soul, and the higher atom that arrives as pure life-giving power, turning the same material toward spirit.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

The two Adams are two stages of a single life. The first is the self we are born as: awake, breathing, but wrapped up in its own small wants. It takes in life the way a cup takes in water. This is a real beginning, yet only a beginning.

The second stands for what a person becomes when the larger self hidden underneath finally wakes up and takes the lead. Someone who has grown whole this way stops only absorbing life and starts giving it. They become a source others can draw from, and that is what it means to change from a living soul into a spirit that gives life.

Live 1 Corinthians 15:45 today

  1. Stand at the window for a minute today and feel yourself as the awareness looking out, not the list of facts about your life. Nothing to achieve, just being here.
  2. Look at one person today, the barista, your kid, a coworker, and see past their role to the same aliveness that is in you. Let that change your tone slightly.
  3. When you feel small or threatened, ask yourself quietly, what in me is watching this? The part that is watching was never in danger.

If you are not only your name and your story, what is it that knows you are reading this?

The same truth in other traditions

Upanishads

You are not the body that is born and dies. You are the awareness in which the body appears, and knowing that changes everything.

Advaita Vedanta · Ramana Maharshi

Ask who you really are and the small self cannot answer. What stays when the answers run out is what you have always been.

Zen

Find the face you had before your parents were born. It is not behind you in time. It is here, under the name you answer to.
