1 Corinthians 6:17 Meaning But He Who Is Joined

But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit.

What does 1 Corinthians 6:17 mean?

Underneath the noise of thought there is a stillness, and in that stillness you are not separate from the source of life. The mind insists you are an isolated fragment, alone against the world.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Underneath the noise of thought there is a stillness, and in that stillness you are not separate from the source of life. The mind insists you are an isolated fragment, alone against the world. But when you become present, when the thinking quiets even for a moment, that sense of separation dissolves.

To be joined is not to travel somewhere or reach some distant God. It is to recognize that the awareness looking out through your eyes and the deeper being of all things were never two. In stillness they are known to be one, and you feel yourself belonging completely, no longer a stranger to the whole.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

Two beings are not standing here, a man below and a power above him. When a person is joined to that power, they are one spirit, one operant presence, without seam. The imagining in a human being and the force that shapes the world are the same activity. What creates the world is the very awareness reading these words.

So joining does not mean reaching toward a distant God. It means recognizing that the creative spirit and the self are already one thing. When that is known, no petition is sent outward and no answer is awaited from elsewhere. Nothing is far off. The one who imagines and the one who fulfils are a single spirit acting. A man is joined the moment he stops treating his own imagining as something less than the very power he was praying to.

SUFISM

Sufism

I breathed into him of My spirit: the link is already in place God says this in the Quran about the shaping of the first human. Sufis take it to mean that the innermost part of a person came from God to begin with, so nearness has something to fasten onto. Being one spirit with God works because a person's deepest life was never foreign material.

A person is with the one they love: attachment settles where someone ends up The Prophet said this in a handful of words that Sufis repeat constantly. Love does more than sit inside a person. It pulls them toward whatever they have handed their heart to, and over time they start to resemble it, so joining begins with where the heart has already gone.

Fanāʾ: The self passing away Sufis use this word for what happens when a person's separate self-will thins out. The habit of standing at the center loosens, and God's will moves through the same person instead. Afterward they still eat, work, and talk like anyone else, but their own preferences no longer have the final say.

When I love him, I am the hearing he hears with: closeness reaches into everyday acts God speaks these words in a saying the Prophet passed on, about a servant who keeps drawing near. The nearness described goes all the way down into a person's ears, eyes, and hands. Being one spirit shows up in small things: what someone pays attention to, what they reach for, how they answer.

ʿUbūdiyya: Servanthood Sufis give this name to standing before God as a servant, and they call it the highest place a person reaches. Al-Ghazali warned that people overwhelmed by nearness sometimes talk as if they had become God, and he treated that as overflow, not a claim. Being one spirit leaves a person a person, given over completely and receiving everything from God, moment by moment.

Live 1 Corinthians 6:17 today

  1. Put the phone face down and take ten slow breaths today, following each one until the running commentary thins out and only being here is left.
  2. Spend a few minutes with someone, partner, child, friend, without planning your next line. Just be in the room with them and feel how little distance there actually is.
  3. In a crowded grocery line or packed train, look around and remember that the same aliveness is moving through every person waiting there. The irritation loosens on its own.

Where did you first get the idea that you are separate from everything else?

The self in you and the being of everything are not two things. You are that, and always were.

The reed cries because it was cut from the reed bed. Every ache in you is the sound of wanting back into the whole.

When the thinking stops, the wall between you and the world is seen for what it was, a thought. What is left has no edges.
