1 John 1:5 · World English Bible
This is the message which we have heard from him and announce to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
The divine is light, and by that light I mean consciousness itself, the pure awareness in which everything you experience appears. It is the same awareness looking out through you at this very moment.
From the Ego v. Being reading below.

EGO & BEING
The divine is light, and by that light I mean consciousness itself, the pure awareness in which everything you experience appears. It is the same awareness looking out through you at this very moment. And in that awareness, in its pure state, there is no darkness at all, which is to say no unconsciousness, no shadow of ego clouding it.
Your suffering comes from that darkness of unawareness, from being lost in compulsive thinking and blind reaction. Yet the light of your own awareness was never touched by it. This is why becoming present heals you: the moment you bring full awareness to any dark, unconscious pattern in yourself, it begins to dissolve, the way a room fills with light and simply has no darkness left in it.

MANIFESTATION
God is light, and light here is imagination, love, and the spirit that made your life, with nothing dark or hostile in it. This is not a doctrine to be argued but something disclosed within a person, seen and known firsthand when it happens to him. The being called God is your own imagining, the creative power housed in you, and its nature is pure light without a shadow of opposition.
What a person keeps imagining he inevitably lives out, so the light in him decides the quality of his world. Everyone is a witness meant to testify to this from experience, not from reasoning. The message is simple and it lands the same way for anyone: the power that shapes your life is your own imagination, and it is wholly light.

ESOTERIC
God is light in the most literal sense the writers could reach: the invisible photon, the radiance standing behind all matter and holding no shadow. The single eye Jesus named is the pineal gland deep in the head, the seat where this inner light is worked, and its melatonin is the very substance spoken of here. A person is not only told about light; the body itself faintly emits it, made of the same brightness. To find God is to find the light already burning at the center of one's own head, needing only stillness to be seen.
Light: the invisible photon, the creating radiance the body carries at the pineal center behind the eyes. Darkness: mere absence, the unlit carnal condition where no light has yet been found.

SUFISM
A heart that keeps hidden corners, small envies and pretenses tucked away, cannot claim to walk in this light, for it wants the glow and the shadow both. The cure is to let the corners be lit, bringing the secret fault into the open of honest self-examination, since the light heals only what it is allowed to touch.
All that shining comes from one source with no dark in it. Whatever brightness a person carries is borrowed, the way a window holds the sun without owning it, so the task is not to produce light but to grow clear enough to pass it through undimmed.
Ego v. Being lens
What in me might quietly dissolve if I looked at it plainly instead of looking away?
The sages speak of a light that shines beyond all darkness, and say that this same light is the one burning inside a person. It is not described as something you travel toward, but as what you already are.
Hakuin compared awakening to ice and water: the ice of confusion is nothing other than the water of clear awareness. The confusion has no separate substance of its own, so when awareness arrives it simply has nothing left to be.
In his book on the niche of lights, Al-Ghazali calls the divine the only real light, and says everything else is lit rather than luminous. Darkness is not a rival power but the mere absence of that light.
