1 John 3:5 Meaning You Know That He Was Revealed

You know that he was revealed to take away our sins, and no sin is in him.

What does 1 John 3:5 mean?

The heart likes to keep a few favorite faults, half hoping they can stay while the rest are forgiven. That quiet bargaining is the disease this exposes, since the one who came carried no such stain and came to lift the whole load.

Sufism

The heart likes to keep a few favorite faults, half hoping they can stay while the rest are forgiven. That quiet bargaining is the disease this exposes, since the one who came carried no such stain and came to lift the whole load. The cure is to hold nothing back, letting even the cherished sin be named and taken.

God is present as the spotless mirror in which a person sees what a clean heart looks like. He does not merely cover the rust; He was revealed to carry it off, so what is surrendered is truly gone.

Live 1 John 3:5 today

  1. Name the one fault you have quietly decided to keep, the one you joke about. Saying it plainly, without the joke, is the first honest look you have given it.
  2. Tell one person the thing you usually leave out of the story. You do not need advice, just the experience of it being said and nothing collapsing.
  3. When the familiar move comes up today, the sharp word, the extra drink, the lie that smooths things over, pause and let it be uncomfortable for ten seconds before you choose. Nothing has to be won in those ten seconds except the pause.

Which fault have I been protecting while handing over all the rest?

The same truth in other traditions

Dhammapada 338

Cut down the tree but leave the root, and it grows back again and again. The one fault you keep is the one that quietly rebuilds everything else.

Stoicism · Epictetus, Discourses 2.18

Every time you act on a habit you feed it, and every time you let the impulse pass without acting you starve it. Nothing stays neutral: the one fault you keep indulging is being strengthened on each occasion.

Tao Te Ching 64

Deal with a thing while it is still small and it costs almost nothing. Left to grow comfortable, it becomes the hardest thing in your life.
