1 John 3:6 Meaning Whoever Remains in Him Doesn’t Sin

Whoever remains in him doesn’t sin. Whoever sins hasn’t seen him and doesn’t know him.

What does 1 John 3:6 mean?

The old word for sin meant to miss the mark, to live turned away from the truth of this moment. It is not a stain on the soul but a symptom of unconsciousness.

Ego v. Being

The old word for sin meant to miss the mark, to live turned away from the truth of this moment. It is not a stain on the soul but a symptom of unconsciousness. When you are truly present, the compulsions that drive people to harm have no room to move.

Wrongdoing comes not from those who are awake but from those still lost in the dream of the mind, who have never felt the living presence beneath their thoughts. To know that presence shows you that your harm was a form of sleep, and in that seeing it begins to loosen.

Live 1 John 3:6 today

  1. Think of something you did that you are not proud of, and look at it without the usual self-attack. Ask what you were not seeing at the time.
  2. When irritation rises at home, catch it in the body before it reaches your mouth. One second of awareness is the whole difference between a comment and a quiet evening.
  3. Under pressure, when the shortcut or the sharp word is right there, slow down enough to feel what you are about to do. Almost no one does harm while they are fully awake to it.

How much of what I regret happened while I was not really there?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Right Mindfulness

Most harm is done while half asleep, acting on impulse without seeing it. When attention is awake in the moment, the impulse is seen before it becomes an act.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Nobody does wrong on purpose. They act out of a mistaken picture of what is good, and the fix is clearer seeing, not more shame.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The skilled cook never forces the blade. Moving with what is actually there, the harm never happens in the first place.
