1 John 3:9 Meaning Whoever Is Born of God Doesn’t Commit

Whoever is born of God doesn’t commit sin, because his seed remains in him, and he can’t sin, because he is born of God.

What does 1 John 3:9 mean?

When a behaviour stops being an option, no willpower is needed; willpower only appears where the identity has not settled. Ask a person why they do not steal from their own children and watch the answer arrive without effort.

Self-Help

When a behaviour stops being an option, no willpower is needed; willpower only appears where the identity has not settled.

Ask a person why they do not steal from their own children and watch the answer arrive without effort. Cannot is the language of identity; should not is the language of a fence the mind is still climbing over in imagination, and anything still being climbed over will eventually be crossed on a bad night.

Born of God puts a seed inside rather than a rule outside, and a living thing keeps working while nobody is enforcing it, so behaviour that contradicts the label loses its supply and starves. Managing conduct without settling the identity means winning single fights forever and never being free of the fight.

Live 1 John 3:9 today

  1. Pick one thing you keep arguing with yourself about at night, the late scroll, the second drink, the message you shouldn't send, and decide it once, out loud, so tomorrow it is not a question.
  2. Tell one person what kind of person you are trying to be, plainly, with no promise attached. Saying it to someone's face makes it yours in a way thinking it never does.
  3. In a tense moment at work, when the cutting reply is already forming, let the silence sit instead of winning. You are not resisting the reply, you are being someone who doesn't send it.

Which rule are you still climbing over in your mind, and what would it feel like if it were simply not an option?

Aristotle · Nicomachean Ethics

Virtue is not a series of hard choices but a settled character, and the person who has it acts well without struggling against themselves. Repeated action becomes who you are, and then it stops costing anything.

Zhuangzi

The skilled butcher's blade never dulls, because he no longer forces it through the bone; he moves where the joints already open. Effort disappears once the doing matches the nature of the one doing it.

One good act pulls the next one behind it, and one wrong act does the same. What you keep doing quietly decides what you become able to do.
