1 John 5:21 Meaning Little Children

Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

What does 1 John 5:21 mean?

An idol is anything outside your own mind that you treat as the power that shapes your life. Circumstances, other people, luck, the doctor, the market, some distant god who may or may not answer: to lean on any of these as the maker of your future is to bow to a thing you have carved yourself and set up in place of the only creative power there is.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

An idol is anything outside your own mind that you treat as the power that shapes your life. Circumstances, other people, luck, the doctor, the market, some distant god who may or may not answer: to lean on any of these as the maker of your future is to bow to a thing you have carved yourself and set up in place of the only creative power there is. That power is your own imagination, the awareness of being that says I am, and it sleeps in you until it wakes as the one who reshapes you from within.

The warning is not against statues but against giving your faith away to the seen. A person who trusts the outer scene has enthroned an idol, and it can only give back what he already assumes. Turn your reliance to the imagining within, and the outer thing loses the power you were lending it.

  1. Catch the sentence you say to yourself about why your life cannot change, the market, your age, your boss, your family. Write it down once and see it for what it is, a small thing you carved and then knelt to.
  2. In a group chat where everyone is agreeing that things are hopeless, do not argue and do not join. Say one plain honest thing you expect to go well and let the thread move on.
  3. When a number, a review, or a text from someone decides your whole mood in three seconds, pause before you react. Ask whether you just handed that screen the authority over your day.

What have I been treating as the thing that decides my life?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

A person who leans on the opinion of others and the shape of his fortune will be moved by every wind. The one rooted in what is within him stays steady while things come and go.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

The mind is the maker, and the world a person lives in follows from what that mind keeps forming. To blame outside things for your life is to look for your face in someone else's mirror.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Marcus wrote that outer events have no power to shape him, only his judgment about them does. Hand that judgment away and you have made a master out of a passing circumstance.
