Ego v. Being

Standing before a people caught between two opinions, the prophet does not ask for their minds to be argued into belief. He asks that their heart be turned back again. Belief is a thought, and thought can waver forever between this god and that. What he prays for is deeper, a returning of the whole being to what is real.

The heart turns back not by adding a new conviction but by a sudden recognition, when the noise falls silent and presence becomes undeniable. That is why he asks God to do the turning; it is not something the striving self accomplishes. When awareness breaks through, a person simply knows what is true, and the divided mind, which had been wandering among opinions, comes home to the one reality it had forgotten.

  1. Instead of reading one more thread about the thing you are torn over, close the phone and go sit somewhere quiet for five minutes. Let the question be there without answering it.
  2. In a conversation where you disagree, stop building your rebuttal and actually hear the person out to the end. Something may shift that no argument of yours could have moved.
  3. When you catch yourself looping on the same worry in traffic or in line at the store, drop the commentary and come back to what is actually around you. The sound, the light, the weight of your own feet.

What is it that you keep trying to think your way into, when what you may need is to go quiet?

Zen

No amount of reasoning gets a person to the thing itself. Understanding arrives all at once, usually when the arguing in the head has finally stopped.

Sufism · Rumi

The heart knows in a way the arguing mind cannot reach. One moment of real seeing undoes years of going back and forth.

Tao Te Ching 48

The way forward is not piling on more ideas but setting them down. What is left when the collecting stops is what you were looking for.
