Whatever you let your body celebrate before the proof arrives is what you have already decided is coming.

A settled nervous system shows up before settled weather does, because a man closes the question inside himself first. The brace he has held through three years of drought comes off, the meal he calls for is a celebration held early, and the sky is the last link in that chain rather than the first.

The order lands on a king who has spent the day watching everything he trusted collapse, and a man who has stopped wondering pulls everyone near him into his state. Running it the other way costs the whole drought: refuse to eat until the cloud shows, and the rain arrives to find nothing left in you to use it.

  1. Before the news comes back, the result, the reply, the scan, eat a proper meal and sit down to it. Not a snack over the sink while refreshing the screen.
  2. Tell one person who is afraid that you believe it will come good, and mean it. Then do something small and ordinary with them, make coffee, take a walk, so your calm is something they can borrow.
  3. On the day the pressure is worst, take the twenty minutes you would have spent bracing and spend them on something restful instead. Let your body come off alert before anything in the situation changes.

What are you refusing yourself until the proof shows up?

Tao Te Ching 15

The one who is settled inside does not need the weather to agree. Stillness comes first, and the muddy water clears on its own.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

The mind takes on the color of its own judgments, not of its circumstances. Decide what this is before the facts arrive and you will meet them already standing.
