Ego v. Being

He sends the servant to look, and the answer comes back empty. Nothing on the horizon, no sign of the rain that was promised. Yet he says go again, and again, seven times over, without gripping the outcome or collapsing into doubt.

His patience is not waiting in disguise. The mind wants the cloud now and suffers each time the sea stays bare. Rooted in the present, he looks, sees nothing, and stays at peace, sending the servant back from a quiet trust that lives underneath wanting. The rain will come. His stillness does not depend on it.

Live 1 Kings 18:43 today

  1. Do the small, unglamorous thing again today, the practice, the application, the sentence of a draft, without checking whether it has worked yet. Just do it and set it down.
  2. When you are waiting on a reply from someone that matters, stop refreshing and go be fully in something else. The answer will come when it comes, and the refreshing never moved it closer.
  3. If something you have been working toward shows no sign of arriving, keep at it without making your mood depend on the result. You can be at peace and still looking.

Can you keep going at something without needing today to be the day it finally shows?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 8

Water does not hurry and does not force, and it still wears through stone. Its patience is not a strategy, it is simply its nature.

Bhagavad Gita 2

Keep doing the work and loosen your hold on the result. The doing can be steady even when nothing visible has happened yet.

Buddhism

Wanting the next moment to arrive already is where the ache comes from. Peace is available in the moment that is actually here, empty horizon and all.
