1 Timothy 6:11 Meaning But You

But you, man of God, flee these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.

What does 1 Timothy 6:11 mean?

You cannot run from something without running toward something, and who you are decides which direction wins. Flight alone leaves a vacuum, and a vacuum refills with whatever filled it before.

Self-Help

You cannot run from something without running toward something, and who you are decides which direction wins.

Flight alone leaves a vacuum, and a vacuum refills with whatever filled it before. Pursuit is what makes the leaving permanent, since moving away from pain works only while the pain is fresh, and moving toward something a person has decided they are keeps pulling long after.

Being named a man of God first does the heavy lifting: the title sets how he defines himself, that definition makes the love of money contradictory rather than merely forbidden, and contradiction is what the personality will not tolerate for long. Righteousness and gentleness are not achievements to bolt on; they are the ordinary conduct of someone who has accepted that title. Let the title go and every one of those qualities turns back into a burden he has to carry by force.

Live 1 Timothy 6:11 today

  1. Instead of vowing to quit the thing you keep quitting, write one line about who you are becoming and put it where you will see it in the morning. Then let today's choices just be what that person does.
  2. Practice the gentle version once on purpose today: the reply you do not fire off, the patience with the slow person in line, the kindness to the colleague who annoys you. One small act, chosen.
  3. When the pressure hits and the old habit calls, do not fight it in place. Move toward something, call the friend, take the walk, start the work, and let leaving happen as a side effect.

Am I mostly running from something, or toward someone I have decided to be?

Turning away from a craving does not end it, since what you merely abstain from still lives in you. Fix the mind on something higher and the old pull loses its hold.
