EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Pressed hard for an answer, he does not squeeze his mind to force one out. He asks for a musician. As the strings begin, the chatter of thought settles, and into that hush a knowing arrives that thinking could not reach.

Clarity comes to anyone this way. Not by pushing harder against the problem, but by growing still enough for something past the mind to be heard. Music can carry a person there, loosening the anxious grip until a wide, present space opens. The hand came upon him only when the playing quieted his thoughts, because the deeper answer speaks after the noise dies down.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

A man can change what he is able to receive by changing how his body and attention are set.

Anger aims focus at the offense, and focus aimed there holds a man in contempt, and contempt speaks in accusations. Music works on him below the level of argument, changing how he is standing in his own body and what his attention can reach, and the language in his mouth changes with it.

Yahweh's hand came while the strings were sounding. The playing did not pull God down; it brought a man into a condition where what God was giving could land and be spoken to a king he despised. The cost of skipping that work is real guidance available in the room and a man too hot to hear it.

Live 2 Kings 3:15 today

  1. When you are stuck on something today, stop working on it. Put on music you love, let yourself do nothing for one song, and see what has shifted when it ends.
  2. If a conversation gets tangled and you both keep pushing, suggest a ten minute break. Walk, get water, come back. The thing you could not solve often loosens in the gap.
  3. Under pressure, when a decision is due and your mind is spinning, step away from the screen for two minutes and breathe. You are not giving up on the problem, you are giving the quieter part of you room to speak.

What have you been trying to force that might answer you if you got quiet instead?

Tao Te Ching

Muddy water clears when you leave it alone. Clarity comes from stillness, not from stirring harder.

Zen

The answer you are forcing is not the answer. Sit until the mind quiets, and what you needed to know is simply there.

Sufism · Rumi

Music opens a door the arguing mind keeps shut. Listen, and something in you remembers what it could not reason out.
